The Confederation of Indian Industry (SR) through its Education Sub-Committee, launched the first edition of Innovator 2009 on 12th February 2010 at Hotel Le Royal Meridien, Chennai. The Sub Committee initiated this unique event this year under the Chairmanship of Dr R Mahadevan, Group Technology Director, India Pistons Ltd. Innovator is a competition aimed at identifying and showcasing the innovative ideas of college students from Technical, Business and Social streams in the Southern Region. It is a three stage project centric contest designed to test the technical/business and social concepts, presentation and creative skills of the participants.
The competition was launched in August 2009 with Road Shows conducted in 7 cities across the Southern Region. The road shows enabled us to reach out to nearly 2000 students across Bangalore, Puducherry, Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Pollachi and Trichy. Following the Road Shows students were asked to send in abstract of their innovative ideas under three streams; Technical, Business and Social. In October 2009 nearly 200 entries were sent in by students from across colleges and institutions and these entries were evaluated by a panel of eminent jury members. The panel of jury consists of representatives from Cognizant, TCS, Mindtree, Take Solutions, TAFE, Ashok Leyland, Ideaplus, GRG Institutions and Manipal Universal Learning Pvt Ltd. The entries were evaluated and 75 entries were chosen for the second stage. At this stage teams were asked to send in final papers of their project/idea and 48 teams sent in entries at this stage. The papers were further shortlisted and 33 papers have been chosen for the final event on 12th February 2010.
CII is partnering with Cognizant as the event sponsor and the prize money for three streams has been sponsored by Manipal Universal Education Ltd, GRG Institutions and Pon Pure Chemicals Pvt Ltd. The final event provides a platform for the budding innovators among the student community to showcase their creativity and unleash the entrepreneurial spirit amongst students. It would also give Industry an opportunity to engage with the best of students from regional / sub-urban colleges. These students are given an opportunity to showcase their ideas at an exposition. Students would present, market and justify their ideas to industry members, angel investors and venture capitalists.
