Tea plantation industry of Assam constitute one of the most productive region in the world, is more than 150 years old, Assam accounts for half of India’s tea production and one sixth of the world’s production. Assam has declared Tea as the state drink. Assam has been the second commercial tea production region; it gives 13% of global Tea production. The estimated area under tea is 2.3 million hectares in Assam with about 765 Tea estates and more than 100,000 Small Tea growers in Assam. Total 753 tea factories in Assam produce 570 million kilo, which is more than half of India’s tea.
There has been a significant increase in production, productivity and domestic consumption of tea since Independence. For an industry which is gradually getting back to its feet after the slump during the last few decades, needs to re strategize its approach towards productivity, sustainability and marketing with tea being a commodity with global appeal the strategies should be long term with global significance.
