For Manufacturing industries in this highly competitive scenario, one of the most effective strategies to improve the bottom-line and staying ahead at all times is improving the productivity coupled with reducing the cost of production without compromising on the quality of product. With globalization having already taken place in India, any industry, small or big, has to give attention to this thing. In the present scenario, the competitiveness is assuming a new dimension.
Even businesses that are profitable can benefit from cost reduction strategies to create an even higher profit margin on its products. Industry champions have understood this and are doing their best to improve their productivity. Use of following approaches will go a long way in helping the industry in this regard.
1. Flow Manufacturing: This is an approach that helps build a variety of products with as little waste as possible. Equipment and workstations are arranged in a sequence that supports a smooth flow of materials and components through the process, with minimal transport or delay. Flow Manufacturing is the linking of manual and machine operations into the most efficient combination of resources to maximize value-added content while minimizing waste. As a result, parts movement is minimized, wait time between operations is reduced, inventory is reduced and productivity increases.
2. SMED: Single Minute Exchange of Dies (SMED) refers to a theory and the techniques for performing setup operations in fewer than ten minutes - the number of minutes can be expressed in a single digit. The knowledge of inexpensive techniques that can be used to achieve quick changeovers is vital.
3. Just in Time Manufacturing: JIT is a philosophy of continuous improvement in which non-value- adding activities (or wastes) are identified and removed for the purposes of Reducing Cost, Improving Delivery, Improving Quality, Adding Flexibility, Improving Performance and Increase innovativeness.
