Solid Waste management is a major challenge in Urban India. Without an effective and efficient solid-waste management plan, the waste generated from various human activities, both in commercial and domestic complexes, can result in health threats and a negative impact on the environment.
Today, over 377 million urban people live in 7,935 towns and cities and generates about 1.4 lakhs tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) per day and most of this wastes find their way to open dumping ground. The key to efficient management of this waste is to ensure proper segregation at source and to ensure that the waste goes through different streams of recycling and resource recovery. However, the segregation of waste at source in India are rare.
Considering the existing scenario of waste management in India, it is imperative to develop and implement Sustainable Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Management systems for Indian cities and towns. This can be achieved by bringing more potential investors, technology providers and waste management companies together to support, partner and invest on the development and implementation of Sustainable MSW Management systems in India.
Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) with the guidance of the Hon’ble Prime Minister for stimulating private sector’s investment in the important sector of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Management has set up a Task Force on Waste to Worth. This Task Force aims to facilitate “Swachh Bharat” Initiative by developing and implementing Sustainable Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Management systems in Indian cities and towns on Public Private Participation (PPP) mode, by bringing in participation of private sector investors for MSW management. The task force comprises leading Indian industry players in the waste management areas.
Further, in order to bring together technology providers, investors and waste management companies on as single platform to deliberate on techno- business solutions towards keeping cities clean in a sustainable manner and to encourage investments in this sector, CII is organizing a National Conference on “Waste to Worth- Swachh Bharat through Private sector investment in Waste Management” from 05-06 October 2018, New Delhi.
