The results of the fourth edition of AICTE-CII Survey of Top Industry-Linked Technical Institutes 2015 were announced at the 5th Global University – Industry Congress in New Delhi on Wednesday. Awards were given to 17 technical institutes in 21 categories which included 10 awards in degree category and 6 in diploma category. In degree category, there were 8 awards in engineering and one each in pharmaceutical and architecture categories. The engineering awards included one award for best National Institute of Technology (NIT) which was won by NIT Trichy and was sponsored by Hindustan Unilever Limited. There was one award in the emerging category in engineering which went to Chennai-based Vel Tech Multi Tech Dr.Rangarajan Dr.Sakunthala Engineering College.

The award for best industry-linked management institute was won by Mumbai-based Prin. L.N. Welingkar Institute of Management Development & Research while there was no winner in the emerging category of management. In engineering, the other winners were D.K.T.E. Society’s Textile & Engineering Institute (Best Industry-Linked Chemical & Allied Engineering Institute - Degree); Thiagarajar College of Engineering (Best Industry-Linked Civil & Allied Engineering Institute – Degree; Best Industry-Linked Computer / IT & Allied Engineering Institute - Degree and Best Industry-Linked Architecture / Planning Institute); Sona College of Technology (Best Industry-Linked Electrical & Allied Engineering Institute – Degree); R.M.K. Engineering College (Best Industry-Linked Electronics & Allied Engineering Institute - Degree); and Sri Sai Ram Engineering College (Best Industry-Linked Mechanical & Allied Engineering Institute - Degree).

The award in the pharma category was won by SVKM’s Dr. Bhanuben Nanavati College of Pharmacy.

Mr Vijay Thadani, Chairman, CII National Committee on Higher Education, Vice Chairman & Managing Director – NIIT & Co-Founder, NIIT University commenting on the survey said, “The survey’s initiative to map the industry linkages of technical institutes has grown in participation every year. By providing an opportunity to institutions to meticulously document their industry linkages, and substantiate the information with evidence, it has brought in an environment of authenticity and veracity into the exercise, which greatly benefits the institutions involved.”

AICTE Chairman, Prof Anil D Sahasrabudhe said, “The survey of industry linkages of technical institutions which AICTE started doing in 2012 with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), and the annual awards which it leads to, is a good way of providing encouragement to institutes and recognizing and rewarding them for their good work with industry. For education to be meaningful, it should be translatable to what the industry requires. Since this survey brings industry experts at every step of the evaluation process, the validation that it provides to institutes is valued by them.”

The best performing institutes were selected after a five-and-half month long online survey and a subsequent four-month jury process. More than 60 experts from industry and academia took part in the jury process which included visits to institutes for on-site assessment of industry linkages of institutes.

The fourth edition of the IndPact survey saw the number of participating institutes increase from 814 in 2014 to 901. This number was 355 in 2013 and 156 in 2012. The discipline-wise submissions rose from 2744 in 2014 to more than 3000 this year. This count was 1124 in 2013.

The popularity of the survey could be gauged from the number of companies which came forward to support and endorse it. The 21 awards were sponsored by as many as seven companies which included long-standing supporters, Tata Chemicals (award sponsors in three categories – for Best Industry-Linked Chemical & Allied Engineering Institute – Degree; Best Industry-Linked Chemical & Allied Engineering Institute – Diploma and Mentor Award for Best Industry-Linked Chemical & Allied Engineering Institute); Elico Limited (award sponsor for two categories -- Best Industry-Linked Electronics & Allied Engineering Institute – Degree and Best Industry-Linked Electronics & Allied Engineering Institute - Diploma); Cadila Pharmaceuticals (award sponsor for Best Industry-Linked Pharmacy Institute - Degree); NIIT Technologies (award sponsor for Best Industry-Linked Computer / IT & Allied Engineering Institute – Degree and Best Industry-Linked Computer / IT & Allied Engineering Institute - Diploma); KHS Machinery (award sponsor for Best Industry-Linked Mechanical & Allied Engineering Institute - Degree); Hindustan Unilever (award sponsor for Best Industry-Linked National Institute of Technology) and NRB Bearings (sponsor of Mentor Award for Best Industry-Linked Engineering Institute - Degree).

Initiated in 2012 by CII and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the IndPact Survey is an objective source of information with the core being the industry – academia collaboration that exists.

The first survey in 2012 focused only on engineering institutes approved by AICTE. Major streams included mechanical, civil, electronics and communications, computer and IT, electrical and chemical. Only those institutes which had been established for 10 years or more were eligible to participate and they also had to be offering at least three out of six streams of engineering.

Year 2013 witnessed the expansion of scope to include four major streams of study, viz engineering, management, pharmacy and architecture/planning. Uni-stream engineering institutes were also allowed to participate, if they fulfilled the other conditions of basic criteria. A separate category was introduced for emerging institutes in the said fields of study.

In 2014, the scope of participation was further expanded to include a separate category of polytechnics as well as separate categories for self-financed and centrally funded institutes such as IITs, IIMs, NITs and IIITs. The broad disciplines remained the same four – engineering, management, pharmacy and architecture/planning.

In 2015, the major addition has been an addition of separate category of awards for mentor institutes.

Being an online survey, the first level of basic scores was calculated through algorithms set after extensive consultation and brainstorming with industry and academic experts. Over a period of four years the algorithms have been modified and refined to incorporate feedback from participants as well as take care of the requirements of the expansion in the scope of the survey.
