Kamal Nath lays the foundation stone of CII Skills Training Park at Chhindwara
Mar 10, 2011

Mr. Kamal Nath, Hon’ble Minister for Urban Development, laid the foundation stone for the CII Skills Training Park at village Imlikheda, in Chhindwara today. Mr. Hari Bhartia, President CII and Mr. Chandrajit Banerjee, the Director General of CII, alongwith industry leaders, Mr. Vikram Kirloskar, Vice Chairman, Toyota Kirloskar Motors, Mr. Vipin Sondhi, Managing Director, JCB were present on the occasion. Senior managers from major partner companies such as Mahindra & Mahindra, Caterpillar, Tata Realty & Infrastructure, Shapoorji Pallonji and GMR were also present. Dr. Naresh Trehan, leading heart surgeon of India also addressed the gathering.

Mr. Hari Bhartia, in his opening remarks said that, “A year ago, CII had committed to set up 10 centres for skill development across India. The Skills Training Park at Chhindwara was the eighth centre.” He further said that CII had not only kept its promise of setting up such a centre, but also brought together the best companies from across India to provide industry relevant training for the rural youth.

Mr. Kamal Nath, said that this training centre will trigger economic transformation and strengthen human resources in rural India. The rural youth  educated or uneducated, should not end up as casual labourers. He said that it was heartening to see CII, an association of small and big industries, reaching out to small, remote locations.

CII first piloted this model of skills training in the premises of Western Coalfields Ltd in 2008. Companies like Punj Lloyd, JCB, Larsen & Toubro and Toyota Kirloskar Motors trained more than 700 local youth in various trades. This small initiative gathered momentum and now 13 companies have come on board to develop a facility that will train more than 1600 youth from across India each year. The facility will have state-of-the –art equipments and workshops, a hostel to accommodate both girls and boys from far flung areas. This will prove instrumental in making rural youth competitive not only within India but globally. More than 600 school drop outs had been trained by JCB in 2 ½ years to operate backhoe loaders. Toyota had trained 2 batches of rural youth in automotive repair. One after another, companies came on stage to commit themselves to whatever it takes to provide the rural youth with the opportunities for gainful employment through this centre.

The Director General, CII announced that the upcoming centre will have facilities for training women. Responding to Dr. Trehan’s request to include training in health care sector, Mr. Chandrajit Banerjee accepted the request heartily.
