CII kicks off Energy Expo 2011 and India Energy Conclave
Dec 05, 2011

“Gujarat plans to increase 4000 MW capacity of Power Generation through successful Power Reforms by the end of this year”, Shri Saurabhbhai Patel

Indian power sector has the potential to turnaround provided the state electricity board takes efforts to come out of the cash losses.

Addressing the 5th edition of CII’s prestigious national event Energy Expo, Shri Saurabhbhai Patel, Hon’ble Minister of State – Industry, Mines, Energy & Petrochemicals said, “The Power sector in India can survive only if it comes out of cash losses. In the case of Gujarat, we turned the tide in 2002-03. We converted loans to equity, ROI of producers was reduced and T&D losses were reduced. High freight charges for coal procurement and absence of significant hydro-electric power made Gujarat’s average tarriff cost high. Inspite of this, by enhancing efficiency, we have converted the state’s power utilities into profit making entities.”

The three day exhibition, organized under the Chairmanship of Mr. Sudhir Trehan, Vice Chairman, Crompton Greaves Ltd, will showcase the latest new and emerging technologies for this segment of industry.

Gujarat is a power surplus state and plans to increase 4000 MW capacity of Power Generation through successful Power reforms by the end of this year along with key initiatives in Hydel, Solar and Wind energy, said Shri Saurabhbhai Patel at the inauguration of CII’s India Energy Conclave & Energy Expo 2011 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Gujarat’s economy has been performing very well as is evident by the state’s growing energy consumption. Gujarat will also buck the national trend by registering an exceptionally higher GDP growth rate compared to the rest of India,”added Shri Saurabhbhai Patel.

Mr. Sudhir Trehan, Vice Chairman, Crompton Greaves and Chairman, Energy Expo 2011 and India Energy Coclave  said, “Inspite of shortage of power in the country, state governments are keeping the the demand for power significantly low by not providing required amount of power to rural and semi-urban areas and thereby buying cheap power from private power companies.” Mr. Trehan recommended an open access system for power, similar to mobile services. He said that if the customers get options to buy power from multiple energy providers, the competition will rise and power prices will be rationalized.

During the Welcome address, Mr. Praveen Toshniwal, Chairman, CII – Western Region, gave an elaborate scenario of the country’s power generation and distribution network, while throwing light on the opportunities and challenges in the sector.
