The First CII NE Career And Skills Expo inaugurated in Aizawl today “Linking Youth to Skills and Employmment” 10 – 12 May 2012: Aijal Club, Aizawl, Mizoram

The Three day North East Career and Skills Expo 2012 was inaugurated on 10 May 2012 in Aizawl, Mizoram by Pu Lal Thanhawla, Chief Minister, Government of Mizoram. Pu Lalsawta, Minister - School Education, Higher & Technical, Law & Judicial, Parliamentary Affairs and Pu Lalrinliana Sailo Minister - Trade & Commerce, Labour and Employment, IT, Health & Family Welfare, Government of Mizoram also joined the Expo.    

 

 Private sector organisations from Pune,        Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and North-East from different           sectors such as IT/ITES, BPO, Media, Tourism & Hospitality,       Animation, Retail, Apparel and others joine dthe Expo. The exposition witnessed an overwhelming response from students as well as faculty members. Over 1000 footfall was recorded on the day one of the expo.

 

National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDI), Khadi and Village Industries, besides local stakeholders - Mizoram Youth Commission and Mizoram Chamber of Commerce also joined the initiatve.

 

Some of the renowned institutes who participated are : Apparel Design and Training Center, British Council, National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) , National Institute of Design (NID) , Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE), Global Talent track Ltd, Liqvid E Learning, APS Health4U Pvt Ltd, Pratham Education Foundation, India Skills, School of Broadcasting and Communication and others.  

 

Pu Lal Thanhawla, Chief Minister, Government of Mizoram appreciated the Expo and congratulated CII for putting together the Expo, which is much required in the state. He mentioned that the state is very committed about the education reforms and is looking forward to intoducing Skills development courses at school and College level. “This is timely as we are embarking on 12 Five year plan for more inclusive growth”, he said. India has demographic advantage of youngest avarage working age of youth. If the young population is given the right skill, this will help to get a livelihood and accelerate economic growth. Also, as Mizoram has the potentail of becoming the gateway to East Asian countries, huge opportunities will open up  in logistic and other sectors which will need skilled manpower.     

 

Pu Lalrinliana Sailo Minister - Trade & Commerce, Labour and Employment, IT, Health & Family Welfare, Government of Mizoram informed that over 3 lakhs students have enrolled in Collages but only 660 seats are available in the governmnet ITI. It is essential to build capacity of institutions and enhance skills of the young population. He mentioned that the youth should be trained as per their potential.

 

Pu Lalsawta, Minister - School Education, Higher & Technical, Law & Judicial, Parliamentary Affairs was happy to see the number of stakeholders who have come to Mizoram from different parts of the country to address the needs of the youth. He mentioned that unemployment causes innumerable social problems, which can be addresed by long term skill training programmes leading to livelihood generation.

 

Mr Abhijit Barooah, Co-chair, CII North East Council mentioned Mizoram has huge potentail in terms of its vast pool of talented young people, many of whom are literate and fluent in English, a very big asset in today’s globalised world. 

 

Mr Ranjan Choudhary, Principal, National Skill Development Corporation stated that developmnet of the Region is directly corelated to skilled population of the state. He informed that today changing the mindset and aspiration of the youth and the parent is critical. “You dont need a degree to get job, but an industry relevant skill” he said. NSDC has 50 pvt sector partners who have set up Vocational Training centers in nearly half of the 600 districts in India with also one center in Aizwal. The Skill Gap Study conducted by NSDC for Mizoram state and the North-East will be the knowledge base for government and private sector intervention and to identify potential employment oppurtunities for the youth within the state, in the region as well as outside including oppurtunities abroad.

 

The broad objective of the Career and Skills Expo is to generate awareness about new career opportunities and the available skill sets required to prepare students of the Mizoram for the upcoming job market.

 

During the Conference “Skill Building and Entrepreneurship Development” Presentation were made by participants followed by an interaction with students. Career Oriented Assessments was organised for studnets. The Focus Sectors included IT/ITES, Fashion and Apparel, Design, Communication, Soft Skills, Healthcare, Automobiles, Retail and others

 

This Expo will give students an opportunity to interface with Skill Providers and understand the new skill training opportunities, dimensions of Entrepreneurship and Vocational training opportunities. The exposition is stated to be visited by School and College Students, local Youth, Potential Entrepreneurs, Parents / Guardians of the children, Students and Faculty from ITIs and Polytechnics and State Government Departments. The Expo will be open from 10 am - 5 pm and will allow free entry to visitors.
