Indian Cement Industry well poised to go the Green and Sustainable way / 8th edition of CII Green Cementech 2012 gets underway

 Delivering the key note address at the 8th Green Cementech 2012 conference, jointly organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Cement Manufacturers Association (CMA), Mr M A M R Muthiah, President, Cement Manufacturers Association, underlined that the potential for emission reduction in Indian cement industry is immense and that it can be a forerunner in this direction.

 

He called on the need for cement industry to respond quickly and effectively to global warming concerns. Adding further, he said, to address these issues, cement sector needs to work at two basic levels – explore alternative energy sources and work more closely with the Government to create an enabling environment for expanding the industry.

 

Mr N A Viswanathan, Secretary General, Cement Manufacturers Association, in his address, said that cement industry has been the pioneer in saving energy and fuel and there is plenty of scope to further reduce waste and promote sustainable future. To achieve this, we need to convey and persuade industry to learn and adapt best practices, he added.

 

In his address on the theme- ‘Make Indian Cement Plants World Class in Green’, Mr G Jayaraman, Chairman, Green Cementech 2012 & Executive President, Birla Corporation Ltd said, Green Cementech has facilitated the sector from preaching Green to practicing Green. Today many companies are going the Green way, he said.

He added that cement industry is highly transparent & sustainable and has enabled the sector to share its best practices amongst themselves. He also said that the cement industry is looking at adapting new modes of operation and aid in the country’s concrete future.

  

He said the options of waste-heat management, alternative fuel sources and innovations in cement production and technology should be explored and advantages of latest innovations like geo-polymer cement and use of nanotechnology should be tapped. He recommended that cement sector needs to further collaborate and work in clusters.

 

Earlier in his welcome address, Mr Ashok Reddy, Vice Chairman, CII-Andhra Pradesh, highlighted the initiatives of CII-Godrej GBC towards promoting Green business in the country.

 

The day was also marked by the release of ‘Manual on Thermal Energy Efficiency in Cement Industry’ by Mr M A M R Muthiah, President, CMA.

 

Mr. S Raghupathy, Executive Director, CII-Godrej GBC delivered the concluding remarks.
