The United Nations General Assembly endorsed the Millennium Declaration in 2000, reflecting the Member States commitment to a global platform promoting peace and security, the reduction of poverty, illiteracy, and disease and the protection of the environment, all requiring strengthened democracy, good governance and protection of human rights. The workshop was organized in presence of Dr Smt Kiranmayee Nayak, Mayor, Municipal Corporation, Raipur ; Mr Ramesh Agrawal, Chairman, CII Chhattisgarh; Shri Pratap Singh, Commissioner, Department of Health & Family Welfare, Government of Chhattisgarh. The State level convener of this Workshop is Mr K Patel, Convenor – HR & IR Panel, Chhattisgarh State Council & Advisor- HRD, Jayaswal Neco Industries Limited. In support of the Declaration, eight Millennium Development Goals (MDG) were adopted in 2002. These Goals have served as a global development framework during the past decade and have influenced national policies throughout the world. In India, efforts to achieve the MDGs have been promoted through the adoption of National Development Goals and the National Common Minimum Program (NCMP), as well as important sectoral initiatives. However, global progress in reaching the MDGs has been mixed. In India, significant progress has been made and at least four of the key national targets relating to poverty, education, gender and HIV/AIDS will be achieved by 2015. Several of the targets relating to discrimination, maternal and children mortality and malaria require accelerated efforts. The Eight Millennium Development Goals are: 1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger; 2. Achieve universal primary education; 3. Promote gender equality and empower women; 4. Reduce child mortality; 5. Improve maternal health; 6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases; 7. Ensure environmental sustainability; 8. Develop a global partnership for development. The Workshop aimed towards bringing together different stakeholders and takes their views on how to eliminate poverty, reduce inequality and promote inclusion through sustainable growth. As part of the National Consultative Process, the participants gave views and suggestions on the principles, goals, timelines, targets and accountability measures that should be taken into account when framing the next post-2015 agenda. The Workshop witnessed the presence of Government Officials, Doctors, civil society members, industries members, Academicians and NGOs. PwC was the knowledge partner of CII for this workshop.
