Green Landscape Rating System launched to increase urban green cover

The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), part of the Confederation of Indian Industry has launched India’s first `Green Landscape Rating System’.  With a vision of achieving at least 33% green landscape coverage in the urban cities in the country by 2020, the rating system was launched by Mr R Parasuraman, the founding chairman of IGBC during the `Green Landscape Summit 2013’. He said the launch of landscape rating is one more milestone in the green building movement.

Dr Chandrasekar Hariharan, Vice Chair, Green Landscape Core Committee said landscape design should be the mainstream part of the building design.  He said there is a need to enhance the forest cover in India, which now stands at 23%.  He added that students will need to play a greater role in future.

Mr C N Raghavendran, Chairman Green Landscape Summit 2013, said that Green landscaping was an imperative tool to create a sustainable tomorrow.   He explained on the intangible benefits like health and well-being of individuals, enhancement of biodiversity, protection of top soil and soil resources. 

Mr S Raghupathy, Executive Director, CII-Godrej GBC, said any space could be made cleaner and healthier, recreational and inspirational through landscaping. He said they would lead to 40-50% savings in water, 20-30% saving in energy consumption, enable health and well-being, promote native species of flora and fauna, enhance biodiversity and help effective waste management.
