Mr Prakash Javadekar, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, recognised India’s Most Sustainable companies at a special presentation of the CII-ITC Sustainability Awards 2014 in New Delhi on 19 December.

The Awards are a part of the CII-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development’s continued efforts to create awareness, promote policy and practices, and create capacity to mainstream sustainability practices. Not only do the Awards help reward exemplary enterprises for their pioneering efforts, but this recognition also helps create beacons of inspiration for others to follow.

In his speech, Mr Prakesh Javadekar suggested that the finance ministry should give tax incentives to companies engaging in sustainable business practices, stating “It is my deep conviction that, going forward, India’s competitiveness will depend on our ability to adapt to sustainability”.

Ms. Meenakshi Lekhi, Member of Parliament, stressed how Indian thought and philosophy is deeply embedded in ideas of sustainability. It is upon this unique legacy that India can build a sustainable and inclusive society.

Mr YC Deveshwar, Chairman, Advisory Council, CII-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development extended his sincere admiration to all those companies who have put themselves through the rigourous awards process, reflecting their commitment to a secure and sustainable future.

This year, nearly 70 companies underwent a rigorous evaluation process that includes an on-site assessment by a peer team of CII-certified assessors, who spent approximately 1000 man-hours per application over a period of six months. The final shortlist of winning applicants was validated by a preeminent jury comprising leaders from government, industry, civil society and academia.

Mr Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, Confederation of Indian Industry, congratulated the winners and thanked the Jury members and assessors for their long hours, wisdom and an eye for detail. He encouraged more companies to take the leap and apply in 2015.
