20 lakh houses for poor to be built: Shivraj Singh Chouhan
Apr 28, 2017

The transformation of Madhya Pradesh from a BIMARU state to one with 7 cities in the National Smart Cities Mission is a result of the state’s policies, said Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Chief Minister, Madhya Pradesh, at a session on ‘Transformational Journey: The Madhya Pradesh Story’ at the Annual Session 2017 of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in New Delhi.

Shri Chouhan said that the state has ensured power and road connectivity. It has also become an investment destination for renewable energy, a highlight being the world’s largest solar power plant of 750MW at Rewa, which created history with the lowest-ever tariff of Rs 2.90 for the first year of operation. Irrigated land has increased from 7.5 lakh hectares in the early 2000s to 40 lakh hectares, and projects are now completed within 1 – 5 years, as against decades earlier. An extensive river-linking project has ensured water availability even in the remotest areas.

Shri Chouhan highlighted agricultural policies and said, ‘Agriculture needs to be a profitable business’. His government has taken initiatives such as introducing new crops like basmati, and combining multiple crops with dairy, poultry and aviary. A food processing policy has been formulated. These efforts, he said, have doubled the agricultural output of MP in the last five years.

On infrastructure, Shri Chouhan stated the state government is connecting every village to roads, power grid, WiFi and drinking water systems. The government will build 20 lakh houses over the next two years for the urban and rural poor, with Rs 3 lakh Centre-state subsidy and Rs 2 lakhs in state-supported financing.  It has also set out to create 7.5 lakh skilled jobs per year for industry.  Inviting industry to participate in these initiatives, he also noted the huge scope in information technology, pharmaceuticals and defense production in the state.

Shri Chouhan emphasised on investing in a sustainable economy to preserve the health of citizens and the environment. He described efforts to improve MP's sex ratio through financial incentives such as the 'Beti Bachao Abhiyan' and stipends for girl students, among others.

Shri Chouhan said that improving the quality of life of both urban and rural poor through affordable housing, small savings, disposable income, security and dignity of life is a priority.

Mr Rakesh Bharti Mittal, Vice President, CII, referred to CII’s partnership as the state investor summit at Indore. Reiterating CII’s commitment, Mr Mittal said that CII is keen to continue working with the MP Government to take forward its pioneering ideas.
