Brief Description:
The Manufacturing sector in India has been undergoing significant transformation over the last decade and a half. From being a sector deploying suboptimal technology and servicing an import substitution market, the sector has come a long way. There are abundant examples of success stories of global scale and standards within the Indian manufacturing sector today and the sector is growing from strength to strength. CII, as the custodian and key representative for the sector has started to capture news, views and developments in the sector through its journal called “Manufacturing Matters”, which has a bimonthly frequency of publication. However, having done that, CII realized that it is quite difficult to get a true and complete picture of the Indian manufacturing sector, based on data and statistics, using any one reference document. Thus germinated the idea of “Manufacturing Figures – Status and Trends in Indian Manufacturing“. Through this publication, CII hopes to create the single reference document, which would answer any queries on the performance of the Indian manufacturing sector, based on data. Developed by the manufacturing vertical within CII, using secondary sources of data, this annual document covers broad trends relating to output, employment, trade, FDI, financial indicators, investments, etc, in a manner that a comprehensive picture of the sector can be obtained by the reader. In an effort to ensure that there is no bias owing to the author, commentary on the data presented has been kept to the minimum. In most sections there are no texts explaining the graphs or tables, allowing the figures to do the talking. In many ways, this is a unique document about the manufacturing sector in India and we hope that it serves the purpose it has been prepared for – to act as a single source of data and figures on Indian manufacturing.
