The wave of urbanisation in India is expected to intensify with rapid economic growth. It is estimated that the urban population in India could cross 600 million by 2030. The Smart City Mission launched by the Government of India envisages India as a land of Smart Cities, with 100 of such state of the art cities doting the Indian landscape by 2020.
This theme paper is brought out in the wake of the Conference on Smart & Green Liveable Cities organised by CII, in association with Department of Local Self Government, Rajasthan and The SPV – Jaipur Smart City Limited on 2 September 2016 at Jaipur. It defines smart cities in the Indian Context, establishes the tools for smart cities and explores the theme of Smart Concepts in City Governance. It also looks into the 'Smart' initiatives in Rajasthan and in major cities.
