Dadra - Nagar Haveli
Dadra and Nagar Haveli is one of the seven Union Territories (UT) of India. The region, which merged with the Union of India in 1961, is spread over an area of 491 sq kms. Landlocked by Gujarat to the north and Maharashtra to the south, 40% of the UT is covered with forests. In addition, natural endowments such as favourable weather conditions and scenic expanses, have made the territory an attractive tourist destination. As per the 2011 census, the population in Dadra and Nagar Haveli is 3.44 lakhs and the literacy rate is 76.24%. The region’s proximity to national financial centres like Mumbai, Surat and Vadodara makes its location vital. Since early 1970s, the UT started taking strides to develop itself as an investment destination. It is being noticed by global investors on account of several aspects such as a peaceful and harmonious labour climate, adequate infrastructure and a variety of agricultural produce. The government has identified the following focus sectors - Textile industry including yarn, spinning and apparel (excluding dyeing), Information Technology/ Information Technology enabled Services, Pharmaceutical Industry, Light Engineering, Electrical Conductors and Allied Industry, Plastics and Plastic products, Marble Tile Industry, Tourism Industry and Creative and Entertainment Industry. Dadra & Nagar Haveli has 49 industrial estates and 3,175 industrial units. It is envisaged that the territory’s capital, Silvassa has a huge potential to develop into a multi-modal logistic hub, being at a crucial intersection of cargo movement from Ahmedabad to Mumbai and being in close proximity of the Dedicated Freight Corridor. This opportunity is expected to be leveraged to develop infrastructure for cargo movement and logistics support at Silvassa. Omnibus Industrial Development Corporation (OIDC) is the main authority to assist and promote the economic development of the UT, covering areas such as textiles, plastics, tourism, agriculture, food-processing and other industries.
