CII Regional Summit on Quality & Sustainable Education
“Realizing Full Human Potential through Inclusive and Holistic Education”
Friday, 14th June 2019 @ Chennai, Tamil Nadu
Quality education is the foundation of the development of the nation, and therefore of the Sustainable Development Goals. According to Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948): 'Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedom' we clearly see that education plays a significant role in nation building. It is a force multiplier which enables self-reliance to boost economic growth by enhancing skills, and improves people’s lives by opening up opportunities for better livelihoods. Quality of Education is proved to directly affect the growth of the nation. The dire need to focus on education has been recognized on many levels, it has been part of the 5 year plans, the Millennium Development Goals and now is part of the sustainable development goals. The SDG 4 that aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all and covers sustainability and quality in a very stringent sense.
When education is given a granular look it is found that parallel to a requirement of quality improvement there is also a need to look into the sustainability factor. The strategic objective of our education system needs to be redefined to include Quality and consciousness rather than just be ambitious programs with a goal to improve academic standards and excellence.
A resilient need is arising for a meaningful change in the education system, wherein we need to move the focus from certification to actual education and realize the relevance of education for the individual making them fit as self-aware global citizen rather than solely industry oriented. Education is a key factor in nation building process thus quality and access becomes a prerequisite. The world today has more resources than ever before, but not everyone can benefit from it. Globally, countries have made major strides in increasing access to education at all levels and increasing enrolment rates in schools, and basic literacy skills have improved tremendously.
