Kerala
Kerala is located along the coastline to the extreme southwest of the Indian peninsula, flanked by the Arabian Sea on the west and the mountains of the Western Ghats on the east. The State has a coastline of 580 km. Spread over 38,863 square km, it is bordered by Karnataka to the north and northeast, Tamil Nadu to the east and south, and the Lakshadweep Sea to the west. The State is divided into 14 districts with the capital being Thiruvananthapuram. Malayalam is the most widely spoken language and is also the official language of the State. Kerala has a high literacy and social indicators on par with developed economies.
Agriculture remains a key sector in the Kerala economy. It is a leading agricultural state in the country and the largest producer of rubber, pepper, coconut and coir. In 2014-15, the state contributed 69 per cent and 73 per cent to India's total rubber and pepper production, respectively.
In order to encourage more manufacturing units, Kerala has taken some major steps in upgrading the skills of labour and for boosting entrepreneurship. Skill training has begun making strides in the State. The Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector is fast emerging into a major income generating and employment providing sector in Kerala with relatively lower investment. MSME sector can lead the State economy by increasing exports through quality production techniques and products.
Recognizing the importance of infrastructure, the State has during the last four years given a thrust to major projects like the Kochi Metro, Vizhinjam Port and Kannur Air Port. These projects are expected to bring about major transformation in the State economy.
