The Indian MSME sector is the backbone of the national economic structure and has unremittingly acted as the bulwark for the Indian economy, providing it resilience to ward off global economic shocks and adversities. the Micro sector with 630.52 lakh estimated enterprises accounts for more than 99% of the total estimated number of MSMEs. The Small sector with 3.31 lakh and the Medium sector with 0.05 lakh estimated MSMEs account for 0.52 % and 0.01 % of total estimated MSMEs, respectively. Out of 633.88 estimated numbers of MSMEs, 324.88 lakh MSMEs (51.25%) are in the rural area, and 309 lakh MSMEs (48.75%) are in urban areas.
On the job creation front, employment as per data available in the National Sample Survey (NSS) during the period 2015-16, the MSME sector has been creating 11.10 crore jobs (360.41 lakh in Manufacturing, 387.18 lakh in Trade and 362.22 lakh in other Services and 0.07 lakh in Non-captive Electricity Generation and Transmission) in the rural and the urban areas across the Country. The micro sector with 630.52 lakh estimated enterprises employed 1076.19 lakh persons, which account for around 97% of total employment in the industry. The small sector with 3.31 lakh and the Medium sector with 0.05 lakh estimated MSMEs employed 31.95 lakh (2.88%) and 1.75 lakh (0.16%) persons of total employment in the MSME sector, respectively. SMEs and CII Membership: The membership portfolio of CII consists of 9000+ member companies, both from public and private sectors. It has an indirect membership of over 300,000 enterprises from 295 national and regional sectoral industry bodies. Around 66s% of CII's membership falls in the Small and Medium Enterprises category who CII services through a network of 62 offices in India including 10 Centres of Excellence and 8 offices overseas.
The CII National MSME Council: CII places utmost importance to the development of Indian MSMEs which manifests itself in the advisory, consultancy, business facilitation and specialized services deployed by CII for enhancing the competitiveness of Indian MSMEs. The CII National MSME Council is an apex body monitoring the needs of Indian MSMEs and representing these concerns at various fora. The Council regularly engages with Ministry of MSME as well other line ministries and government departments to discuss the concerns of Indian MSMEs. It works with government and industry to raise the competitiveness of Indian MSMEs and enhance the productivity levels of each sub-sector through adoption of best practices, knowledge management systems and appropriate technologies The key focus of the council is towards ease of doing business, technology, finance and digital trade which will help MSMEs to integrate into global supply chain and become future ready. The Council works closely with CII Regional MSME Sub-Committees and Regional and State Offices in realizing CII’s MSME development goals across all regions. In addition, the Council plays a key role in strengthening India’s bilateral SME cooperation with developed and developing countries.
CII has partnered with Mastercard’s Centre for Inclusive Growth for the project Digital Saksham – a 3yr long term ambitious project launched by Hon’ble Union Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari ji. The project aims to help Micro & Own Account Enterprises integrate themselves into the digital economy, expand their access to markets, diversify their customer base and solidify their supply chain. The potential reach is of touching 300,000 MSMEs in 25-30 cities across eight states - Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Delhi-NCR, Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana and Punjab handholding micro-enterprises in clusters / sectors such as textile, Sewing Machine, Auto-Parts, Welding, Food-Processing, Leather, Food Processing, Engineering, Retail Shops, Coir, Woodcraft, Jewellery to adopt digital tools.
A report on ‘India D2C Report 2022’, prepared by CII was launched this year in the presence of the Hon’ble Minister of State, Ministry of MSME, Government of India and Secretary, Ministry of MSME Government of India. The report analyses the e-commerce evolution in India so far, the emerging collaboration models, key drivers and enablers of the Direct-to-Consumer (D2C) evolution and its massive benefits for all stakeholders. As part of the research, 800+ end-consumer surveys were conducted and 25+ interviews with founders and co-founders across the D2C ecosystem to identify the challenges and bottlenecks in greater Online-Offline integration.
