Andaman
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, an archipelago in the Bay of Bengal, is a union territory. Consisting of 527 small and large islands, the Andamans are dotted with a a 100-km coastline and covered with dense forests. Sitting close to an international trade corridor, the Andamans, where the rate of literary is high and society heterogeneous, is a bright candidate for a thriving container port. The Government of Andaman and Nicobar has created an enabling environment and announced several policy measures and incentives to attract investment across sectors.
The GSDP at current prices for 2014-15 stood at Rs 5721 crores with a growth rate of 10.89 per cent over previous year.
The Andamans’ growth potential is stated to be high in areas such as tourism, energy, shipping, minerals & mining, livestock and marine products. A greater thrust on MSMEs, and also services industries, particularly tourism, are some of the recommended initiatives which will take the union territory to the high-growth orbit. A roadmap to maximize its unconventional energy resources is another recommended step.
It is widely felt that the archipelago will win a place of prominence in domestic as well as global value chain by leveraging its proximity to countries such as Thailand, Myanmar and Indonesia, and Indian port cities like Kolkata, Chennai and Vizag, and also by integrating with the East Coast Industrial Corridor (including Chennai-Vizag Industrial Corridor), Amritsar-Kolkata Industrial Corridor and North East Myanmar Industrial Corridor.
