Located in the North Eastern part of India, Meghalaya is chiefly an agricultural state with 80% of its 3 million people depending on the farm sector for sustenance. Rich in flora, fauna, power, and mineral deposits, Meghalaya is a state where major crops are rice and maize. It is also known for its horticultural crops such as orange, lemon, pineapple, guava, litchi, banana, jack fruits and temperate fruits such as plum, pear, peach, etc. potato, ginger etc. Meghalaya is also home to rivers and streams – something which is an additional source of hydro-electricity generation – and vast deposits of coal, limestone, granite, clay and other minerals.
The GSDP at current prices for 2015-16 stood at Rs 27305 crores with a growth rate of 13.46 per cent over previous year.
In 2004-05, the contribution of the services sector in the state’s GSDP at constant prices was $382.7 million, which reached $ 682.3 million in 2014-15.The State Government has identified a few sectors of focus – industries based on agricultural, horticultural and plantation produce; bamboo, medicinal plants / herbs, tea, etc; mineral-based industries (eg. ferro-alloys, cement Plant, steel processing etc.); IT-based enterprises, pharmaceuticals; food processing; tourism (tourism infrastructure including resorts, hotels, restaurants etc.) and hospitality; hydropower; art and craft industries. The Travel and Tourism Department in Meghalaya is responsible for 0.1% of India’s GDP. Tourism development is undertaken as to ensure sustainability and conservation of the states environment and natural resources. The Government is working on creating basic infrastructure for tourism development and also act as a facilitator for private investment in this sector. As part of its focused exercise to increase ease of doing business, the Meghalaya Government has initiated a number of processes such as registration for VAT, payment of taxes, way-bills administration; transit passes, processing of VAT returns, etc.
