Public and private sectors to work together for faster growth and National development – Anant Geete
Apr 07, 2015

Mr Anant Geete, Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, has called upon both the private and public sectors to work together to make the Prime Minister’s Make in India programme a success. The minister was addressing the Session on “PSE – An Instrument for bringing transformation in Indian economy” at the CII National Conference and Annual Session focusing on “Building India: A shared responsibility” here today.

He said both the sectors are playing a complementary role in the nation’s growth and development. But it is time that this complementarity is taken forward to bring about the desired goal of achieving faster and stronger economic growth.

The Minister said the Public sector was instrumental in building the capital goods and heavy industry in the country at a time when it was most needed. Subsequently, the private sector too has made a big progress in this sphere.

He opined that PSEs should be technology driven to be globally competitive and for this research and development should be given stronger focus among PSEs.

Further, he added that “the ‘Make in India’ programme has caught on. We are receiving a lot of enquires from overseas manufacturers. The Government is working towards ensuring that the manufacturing sector gets the much needed boost from new industries and new technologies.”.

On the question of several board level vacancies existing in PSEs, the minister said that the new Government is already on the job and will soon have competent persons to fill in the vacancies.  For selection of independent directors, the concerned body is taking action in this regard.

Dr Janmajeya Sinha, Chairman, Asia Pacific, Boston Consulting Group asked if the Government could look into ways of institutionalizing the appointment and tenure of PSE Chief Executives and ensure the least interference with the day to day working of the PSE management while the Government should operate as owners to hold PSEs responsible for its performance.

Mr Naushad Forbes, Vice President, CII, appreciated the minister’s role in giving the right direction to the Public sector enterprises and looked forward to his support to working together with CII.
