Industry Calls for a Nurturing Open Culture in Organizations to Promote Innovative Thinking

14000 startups have registered across the country under DIPP since the Start-up India, stand up India initiative was launched by the Government of India, Mr Manjit Nayak, Additional Director & Officer in Charge, Software Technology Parks of India, Kolkata said at the inaugural of the Innovation 2019: Productivity & Innovation conference organized by CII in Kolkata today. He added that among these registered start-ups, 20% belong to the Tier II and Tier III cities of India which shows that innovation crosses barriers of location. Mr Nayak spoke about the inclusivity in the start-up India schemes and also about the Software Product Policy which has been started by the Government of India with a corpus of INR 1500 crores to boost the innovation ecosystem. Mr Nayak also added that the Centres of Excellence of the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) in Fintech, Agriculture, IoT, Healthcare etc. would help boost the innovation ecosystem.

Speaking at the occasion, Mr Vinaya Varma, Chief Executive Officer, mjunction services limited emphasized that the most important aspect of innovation is to “listen to the pain points of the customers and solving them.” He said that it is the successful implementation of innovation which “separates a successful and a not so successful organization.” Mr Varma spoke for encouraging and building an open culture in organizations by rewarding identification of bureaucratic processes, questioning status quo, questioning processes, encouraging curiosity and finding better ways to do things. He added that to bolster an innovation culture, organizations and leadership should keep an eye out for “imagination and creativity” while recruiting talents. 

Welcoming the delegates and speakers at the Innovation 2019 conference, Mr Abhijit Roy, Deputy Chairman, CII Eastern Region said that Innovation in the future is much more than inventing. It’s about figuring out how one can add unique value that enhances competitiveness for domestic as well as global markets. It’s about how fast you can learn, unlearn, relearn and acquire new skills, he added. Mr Roy also briefed about the CII innovation initiatives in the east and also nationally. He said that the Confederation has brought in the unique initiative of Innovation Clubs in the eastern region and have added quite a few clubs in states like Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Odisha, besides West Bengal.

Mr Dipankar Chakrabarti, Executive Director, Technology Optimization Lead, PricewaterhouseCoopers India opined that young students should be encouraged to move towards entrepreneurship as the country should strive to become a product provider more than being a service provider.

The Innovation conference of CII saw a day-long display and demonstration by the students of the CII Innovation Club. Bridging the gap between industry and academia, CII has started innovation clubs in institutes mentored by senior industry professionals with the aim that the projects ideated by students can be made commercially relevant and viable. The top 27 projects from 30 institutes that are displayed in the conference today are selected by a jury comprising of industry stalwarts and are from top institutes from the state. The projects range from IT, healthcare services, food products to security and safety systems among others.
