India needs to build its economy on 21st Century Technology and 21st Century Jobs

Mr S Gopalakrishnan, Past President, CII and Co-founder Infosys & Chairman – Axilor Ventures said that India needs to build its economy on 21st century technologies and 21st century jobs. He was speaking at the People First AI Strategy session during the CII Annual Session 2019 with the theme of ‘India 5.0: India@75 and Beyond’.

According to him, the current wave of technological revolution is different from earlier revolutions. For India to lead in AI (Artificial Intelligence), he said that India needs to invest in AI infrastructure and needs to create institutes across the country researching on AI. While jobs will be lost due to AI, he believes that new jobs will be created due to AI and there needs to be a strategy for skill development in AI.

Prof Amir Globerson, Professor, Blavatnik School of Computer, Tel Aviv University said that AI holds potential in revolutionizing medicine, reducing risks for human and, predicting natural disasters. He said that large volumes of data, computational resources, academic research and open source culture are required for AI development. He added that in the next five years there will be improvements in the interaction between AI and robotics and interaction between machines and humans will increase.

Dr K V Sreerama Murthy, CEO & Chief Data Scientist, Quadratyx said that it is positive that India has placed people at the center of its AI strategy. He said that Indian Industry can lead in mentoring of AI technologies by spreading technologies quickly at affordable costs. He added that India should adopt technologies to the Indian context. 

Prof Soumitra Dutta, Professor of Management and Former Dean, SC Johnson College of Business, Cornell University said that it is increasingly important for all countries, including India, to understand how AI interacts with people and society. He mentioned that in the last 10 – 12 years, there has been surge in interest in AI due to investments in computational power and hardware. He added that currently a large part of the conversation on AI is about job losses and this needs to change.
