MBBS Syllabus is Being Reformed: Ms. Preeti Sudan, Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare

A new syllabus for doctors is proposed after many years, said Ms. Preeti Sudan, Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare at the session on Future of Healthcare. She was speaking at the CII Annual Session 2019 being held with the theme of 'India 5.0: India@75 and Beyond'.

Ms Sudan said that the private sector should actively participate in Ayushman Bharat scheme, particularly in the 1.5 lakh Primary Wellness Centres to effectively tackle growing burden of NCDs. The Secretary added that a futuristic vision for the Indian healthcare sector needs to include elements of accessibility, affordability and inclusivity of services.

The government has recently announced new clinical trial rules with the objective of diverting innovations back to India. Ms Sudan emphasised the need to leverage technology for enhancing Point of Care Diagnostics, Telemedicine, portability of technology along with training of nurses, doctors, and pharmacists to make healthcare available to the remotest village. Multi-pronged reforms are being undertaken to redefine the way Healthcare is delivered including new rules to enable the growth of medical technology etc.

Dr. Indu Bhushan , CEO, Ayushman Bharat -Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana said that in the long run AB-PMJAY will transform not only the health and income status of the population but also the functioning of the Indian healthcare system. With the progress of AB-PMJAY, the role of the private sector will expand. Engagement between the government and private sector will lead to a better continuum of care and uniformity of standards and protocols in insurance.

Representing the pharmaceutical sector Mr. Srini Srinivasan, Co- Chairman, CII National Committee on Pharmaceuticals & MD, Pfizer Healthcare India Pvt. Ltd. highlighted that advancements in science and technology have resulted in the latter becoming common. Patients are increasingly getting involved in their health needs as well as the health system. Thus, as far as the manufacturing of drugs in India is concerned, it will require a favourable ecosystem that is inclusive of all the stakeholders, he added.

Dr. Naresh Trehan, Chairman, CII Healthcare Council and Chairman and Managing Director Medanta-The Medicity, lauded the ambitious AB-PMJAY scheme, assured the government that the private sector is keen to participate to make it a success and concurred that the ultimate objective of the sector is to be able to provide quality and affordable healthcare to every Indian.
