There is a need to integrate vocational and main stream education, Dr KP Krishnan

CII Telangana in collaboration with Telangana State Higher Education Council (TSCHE) & JNTU Hyderabad organised EDU Summit with the theme “Reimagining the future of Higher Education” at Hyderabad today.

The objective of the Summit was to deliberate on the future of Higher Education, Employability Skills and Industry-Academia Collaboration. 

Dr KP Krishnan, IAS, Secretary, Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Govt of India spoke on public policy and government’s approach to skilling and vocational education. There is a need to integrate vocational and mainstream education. Education is about livelihood creation. Greater integration of vocational livelihood component into all aspects of education is the need of the hour, said Dr KP Krishnan. Apart from the traditional manufacturing sector, there has been an emphasis on the service sector and short term courses. Creation of sector Skills Councils led by industry bodies is also a welcome step.

Dr Krishnan mentioned the 5 principles of design which the Ministry of Skill Development, is focusing on for all the future programs. These are focused on vocational education system with learner-centric modules and focus on inclusivity. Second focus on greater employer connect, third making States equal partner as skilling and vocational education needs to be locally driven. Fourth, Listen, Learn and respond continuously. Taking feedback and improving on it is important. Fifth, the usage of technology to increasingly drive change. 

Dr Krishnan also spoke about the broad draft Vision 2020 which has strongly emphasised on the dual education system, strategic priority to catalyse demand for formal skills from small and informal entrepreneurs and creating an enabling and inclusive skilling environment. There is a need to incorporate these in the new generation Skilling programs, he said.

Dr BVR Mohan Reddy, Chairman, CII- Education Council & Executive Chairman, CYIENT Ltd highlighted the need to appropriately leverage the demographic dividend of the country by educating and skilling them well and ensuring that they are gainfully employed.

Technology today is impacting all industries and Education Industry has also evolved to Education 4.0, he said. Dr Reddy mentioned his 3 Asks the educators – First to make learning student-centric, Second to focus on the 4 C’s of Learning which is Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Improve Communication and ability to listen, Collaboration -Develop multidisciplinary approach and Creativity & Innovation. His third task was to emphasise on Research.

Prof Papi Reddy, Chairman, Telangana State Higher Education Council highlighted the need to bridge the gap between Industry and Academia. He requested industry members to collaborate with universities and share the latest industry updates with the faculties.

Mr Vagish Dixit, Convenor, Education & Skills Panel, CII Telangana & Managing Director, ALPLA India spoke on the need to connect skills with education and education with employability. We cant be competitive if we are not skilled, he said. He also mentioned that CII has been working closely with the State and Central government in the area of Education & Skills and have facilitated Facility, Faculty, and technology upgradations in institutes. There are successful models of Industry-Academia collaborations which can be a beacon for the rest of the country, he said.

Earlier In in Welcome Address, Mr D Raju, Chairman, CII Telangana & Managing Director, Kirby Building Systems & Structures, India said that the education system needs to be more case study based. Industry driven courses are changing the DNA of the Education system. There is a need to nurture the culture of Innovation & Research he said.

The Summit was also addressed by Mr B Vinod Kumar, Vice Chairman, Telangana State Planning Board.
