"Openness, fairness and inclusiveness are the three pillars of GeM- a symbol of a truly transparent e-marketplace"- Shri Piyush Goyal, Minister of Commerce and Industry and Railways, Government of India

The third edition of the National Public Procurement Conclave jointly organized by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and CII-Tata Communications Centre for Digital Transformation in partnership with Government e-Marketplace (GeM) and Ministry of Commerce & Industry took off to a great start today at New Delhi.

In his Inaugural Address, Shri Piyush Goyal, Minister of Commerce & Industry and Railways, Government of India mentioned that GeM symbolizes a transparent and corruption free procurement system. He expressed that the two-day conclave shall further help to set an actionable agenda that will unify all Government procurement, across all Ministries and Departments, of Government of India and State Governments within a defined time frame. He stated that GeM is unique in various ways as it does not operate on any algorithms to support/ promote any product or supplier and also does not solicit any business through advertisements, deep discounts, predatory pricing etc. GeM focusses on giving balanced and fair access to all suppliers in an agnostic manner in market place.

Shri Goyal further insisted that Make in India should be given preference through GeM portal by giving preference to products/ services of India. He urged that GeM portal should be taken to the next level wherein all contractors/ sub-contractors of government departments/ PSUs should procure from GeM.

He stated that that the target of Rs 5 lakh crore business through the GeM platform is achievable in less than 5 years. He expressed that GeM should take a high jump and be now open to common man, so that they benefit from lower cost of products and services that are available on GeM. However, he cautioned that the quality of products and services must not be compromised, and stringent mechanisms like blacklisting and name and shame be put in place against any poor quality of products and services.

In his address, Shri Som Prakash, Minister of State of Commerce and Industry, Government of India stated that with more than 63000 MSMEs, more than 3600 startups and more than 8000 women entrepreneurs, GeM provides a large, efficient and an inclusive ecosystem. He further stressed that GeM should ensure the quality of products and services as well as address payment issues.

In his welcome address, Shri Ajay S Shriram, Past President, Confederation of Indian Industry and Chairman & Senior Managing Director, DCM Shriram highlighted that GeM is state of the art public platform ensuring transparency, efficiency and speed and has the potential to become next amazon given the market size and tech capabilities. GeM ensures cashless and paperless transaction in line with digital government of India initiative.

Shri Talleen Kumar, CEO GeM stated that transparency, inclusivity, technology and nation building are the key elements of GeM. He further mentioned that GeM ensures minimum government and maximum governance, encourages competition and provides huge cost savings for the government.

GeM awards were also given away at the Conclave. Among the winners from the Ministry in the buyer category were the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and the Ministry of Personnel Public Grievances and Pension. Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and Arunachal Pradesh bagged the buyer state awards in different categories. Airports Authority of India and Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. were awarded as super buyer in the PSU category. Tata Motors Ltd, Vijay Stationery Mart, Roma Enterprises and SISL Infotech Pvt. Ltd. were the awardees in the Seller category while Arsenal Infosolution Pvt. Ltd. bagged the award for the most promising start-up.

Shri S Suresh Kumar, ACEO & JS, GeM expressed his vote of thanks and welcomed the suggestions to make improvements in the GeM platform.
