TN Government to setup Turmeric Research Centre in Erode

Government of Tamil Nadu said that Tamil Nadu Government will set up a Turmeric Research Centre in Erode in his keynote address at the third Edition of PonManjal - ‘CII Turmeric Conclave 2021’ organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Erode Zone from 29 September – 1 October 2021 through Virtual Platform. In his address, he mentioned that Tamil Nadu shares 14.04 percent of the total production of Turmeric production in India. Erode district is the largest district in turmeric cultivation by contributing 24.14 percent of the total area and 33.37 percent of the total production. He also said that the Government of Tamil Nadu has created a trading center exclusively for Turmeric which is integrated with e-Nam. He also said that the GI tag given for Erode Turmeric has huge potential for exporting from Tamil Nadu and assured that Government will support the turmeric farmers in all the aspects of turmeric production.

Dr S Chandrakumar, Chairman, CII Tamil Nadu in his special address said that turmeric is being used for several centuries in India. India is a global leader in turmeric production. India being one of the major producers of turmeric, contributes 80% to global production. Further, he said that the increasing importance attributed to superfoods and their health benefits in developed countries coupled with the anti-cancer properties exhibited by curcumin, it is natural that the market for Turmeric across the world is expected to grow exponentially. This has to be capitalized in India, especially the Erode District in Tamil Nadu is in the best position to benefit from this traction. He also said that CII invites all the stakeholders involved in the value chain of Turmeric to join hands in initiating steps towards the development in this sector.

Mr D Venkateswaran, Past Chairman, CII Erode Zone & Partner, CD Techno Tex LLP,  in his welcome address said that turmeric is very important in day today life and used as covid prevention medicine. He also said that the USA is the largest consumer of Indian turmeric, imported 22 percent of the total exported value, followed by Bangladesh (18%), Iran (6%), and UAE (5%) in the last year. Some of the other importing countries are Malaysia, UK, Morocco, Germany, and Japan. In order to meet the export demand, we need to increase the productivity of Turmeric cultivation by adopting the newest technologies.

Mr D Senthil Kumar, Chairman, CII Erode Zone & Director, Sakthi Masala Pvt Ltd in concluding remarks thanked the Government for the various schemes available for Turmeric cultivators.

The 3-day conference would focus on Agricultural Best Practices; Vertical Farming – Alternative means of production of Turmeric; Quality Standards & Requirements – Certification & Testing; Geographical Indication (GI) Tags; One District One Product – Support System besides Export Requirement of Turmeric and E-National Agriculture Market (E-NAM).
