Government Backs Industrial Development-Willing to Help Potential Investors: Mr Rajiva Sinha, Chairman, West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC) and invited industry members to join BGBS 2022 on 21 & 22 April, at Kolkata

West Bengal is investment-ready and willing to assist potential investors desirous of setting up industry in the state. This was stated by Mr Rajiva Sinha, Chairman, West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC), Government of West Bengal, at the Bengal Global Business Summit 2022 held at New Delhi today. He led the delegation of GoWB, having Mr Manish Jain, Principal Secretary, Department of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal , Mr Barun Ray, Principal Secretary, Department of Labour, Government of West Bengal, Mr Sanjiv Paul, Chairman, CII Eastern Region,   Mr Sanjay Budhia, Co Chairman, CII National Committee on Exim, Mr Prashant Sharma, Chairman CII  West Bengal State Council, Ms Sucharita Basu, Vice  Chairman CII West Bengal State Council and Mr Mehul Mohanka, Co Chairman, CII National Mining Committee. The meeting witnessed over 50  one to one meetings plus participation  of over 200 members.

Shri Sinha enunciated that West Bengal has the tremendous potential to serve as a gateway to the East and North- East. It boasts of premier institutions such as the IIT and IIMs and has the advantage of two international airports within its precincts and the major gamechanger would be the establishment of the deep-sea port which is proposed to be established shortly to facilitate overseas trade.

Mr Sinha further averred that West Bengal was the first state to post positive- growth during the pandemic, underscoring the state’s capacity to withstand macro-economic shocks. What is more, tax revenues have gone up and capital expenditure has increased in critical areas such as infrastructure as well as in areas such as agriculture and allied, social sector, among others. He mentioned that the state has the presence of leading education and health institutions which would help industry to set up business in this sector. He elaborated on the facilitative policy environment for setting up educational and healthcare institutions in the state under the public private partnership model. He also mentioned that the government has provided a primacy of place to skill development in the state.

Shri Sinha further elucidated that the government had taken major strides in the ease of doing business even prior to the start of the ease of doing business rankings. As a result, compliances have been reduced and business laws have been worked upon and simplified. What is more, during the last decade the number of manhours lost by businesses owing to strikes and lockouts have been reduced to almost nil. Besides, the government is geared towards providing training and upskilling and bears the entire cost of training the workers.

CII is willing to set up offices of its Centres of Excellence in the State in areas such as green energy solutions, electric vehicles, food and agriculture, logistics, among others and partner with the West Bengal Government in its journey towards its transformation to a business-friendly state.
