Tourism has emerged as one of the fastest growing sectors in the world over the past six decades. Over the years, the sector has undergone a remarkable transformation. It is being noticed that the growth in international tourist arrivals in the developing nations has been more than that in the developed ones and such a trend is expected to continue going forward. India has been no exception. According to World Economic Forum’s Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index 2017, out of 136 nations India has jumped 12 places to 40th position to figure in the most improved countries. It is encouraging that the extent of growth in visitor exports is likely to outpace that in domestic tourist spending in the country over the next decade.
The report prepared by CII provides an insight into the Travel & Tourism industry. Apart from giving a global perspective, it depicts the scenario in India’s tourism sector highlighting the tourist inflows, forex earnings from tourism, government initiatives taken towards the development of this sector and also the outlook for the next decade. In addition to undertaking a regional analysis, the report focuses on the immense potential and investment opportunities in the Northern Region. An attempt has been made to study the tourism policy of different states. The pain points faced by the tourism sector have been brought forth and certain recommendations have also been made to bring about further growth and development of the sector.
