Update on the CII Leh Relief and Rehabilitation Project

It was almost an year back, that Leh witnessed massive destruction, triggered by the cloud burst on the intervening night of August 5 and 6, 2010.

We are happy to share with you that as committed CII handed over the remaining 11 houses to the beneficiaries at Village Saboo, Leh on 4th August, 2011, in the presence of Mr Abdul Rahim Rather, Minister of Finance and Ladakh Affairs, Govt of J&K, Mr T Angchuk, Deputy Commissioner, Leh and Mr Vijay Thadani, Chairman, CII Northern Region. This marks the completion of the CII Relief and Rehabilitation Project, which commenced last year at Leh.It may be recalled that after the flash flood struck Leh last year, CII worked in close association with the local administration in the relief and rehabilitation operations. Supported by its member companies, CII mobilised 20 tonnes of immediate relief worth Rs 1.2 crore, which were distributed in 21 locations. As the next step, rehabilitation had to be provided to those rendered homeless. As an initial step, 2 community tents, which could house 30 to 40 people each, were provided.

CII, under the guidance of Mr T Angchuk, Deputy Commissioner, Leh took the responsibility of building 13 houses in Saboo village, which were completely destroyed in the floods. The construction work which commenced in September saw Mr P Chidambaram, Union Home Minister, inaugurating the first house constructed by CII and handing over the keys to the first beneficiary on 30 October 2010. The 2nd house was handed over to the beneficiary on 2 November 2010, after which CII wound up the work due to the harsh winters.

CII was the first organization to reach Leh this year and re-commenced the construction work on 3 April 2011.

CII has also handed over construction material, which includes approximately 2300 bags of cement, steel TMT, GI pipes and about 700 CGI roofing sheets to Mr Rigzin Spalbar, Chief Executive Councillor, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council to distribute among needy flood victims, who have not been able to repair / reconstruct damaged houses.

During our visit to Leh on 4th August, we interacted with the earlier beneficiaries as well as to whom we handed over the houses, the feedback has been very positive and they are appreciative of the CII support. In fact the District Administration also spoke positive about CII’s contribution.
