The transition in Indian urban population, which is expected to reach approximately 600 million by 2031, would not simply be a demographic shift as it would place cities and towns at the center of India’s development trajectory. Currently, only 30% of India’s population lives in urban areas which is much lower than other major developing countries - 45% in China, 54% in Indonesia, 78% in Mexico, and 87% in Brazil. By 2030, it is expected that urban sector contribution to the nation’s economy would amount to around 70% of the GDP, 85% of the total tax revenue and 70% of all new jobs ...
