India is witnessing a remarkable rise in intellectual property filings, with 236% growth in IP filings and 155% growth in patent grants by academic institutions” says Prof Unnat Pandit, Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks, Intellectual Property Office, Government of India

In his Special Address at the CII Annual Summit on Technology, IP, and Industry-Academia Partnerships, Dr Rajesh S. Gokhale, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, Government of India stated that India is poised to become a global leader in biotechnology and life sciences, and this can only be achieved through continuous innovation, collaboration, and scaling up of successful research outputs into tangible solutions that address both domestic and global challenges. He further highlighted the importance of industrial revolution and that biorevolution is set to shape society towards a better future. Our focus is not only on the advancement of research but also on its translation into viable products that serve humanity, especially in sectors like healthcare, agriculture, and energy.

Prof Unnat Pandit, Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks, Intellectual Property Office, Government of India in his address highlighted the importance of protecting intellectual property (IP) and the intellectual contributions of scientists and technologists. He emphasized the positive momentum in IP filing and protection, with a significant rise in filings and grants, especially by academic institutions.

In his opening address, Dr Naushad Forbes, Chairman, CII National Committee on Technology, Innovation & Research, IP, & Industry-Academia Partnership Forum & Co-Chairperson, Forbes Marshall emphasized the importance of scaling India's in-house industry R&D investment, which currently stands at 0.3% of GDP, against the global average of 2.1%. He also appreciated the establishment of the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) alongside sector-specific funds such as the 3-billion-dollar electronics R&D fund. He stressed the importance of encouraging collaborations where academia solves industrial specific problems, and industry takes responsibility for commercializing these solutions, ensuring mutual benefits and long-term success.

Mr Sanjeev Krishnan, Chairperson, PWC India urged for stronger ties between industry and academia. He highlighted the importance of collaboration between industry and academia to foster innovation and ensure local ideas are developed and monetized within India.

Mr Sunil Chordia, Co- Chairman, CII National Committee on Technology, Innovation & Research, Chairman & Managing Director, Rajratan Group, while conveying his vote of thanks called for encouragement to explore new ideas, forge meaningful partnerships, and chart a future defined by impactful collaborations.

The Conference also witnessed the release of a Compendium of exemplary case studies on genomic technologies and a Policy Communique outlining sectoral recommendations for fostering Industry-Academia Partnership for R&D and Innovation.

The summit also showcased exhibitors from various IITs and private institutions showcasing cutting-edge solutions, breakthrough innovations, and transformative technologies. The two-day summit shall witness the series of engaging discussions by industry and Government stalwarts on various topics related to Technology, IP, and Industry-Academia partnership. CII IP awards, Industry -Academia partnership awards, and Indusrtal Innovation awards shall also be conferred at the summit.
