Rooftop solar installations have exceeded 16,000 a day: Shri Pralhad Joshi
India’s energy security will be driven not just by access to resources, but by our ability to manufacture, innovate and build globally competitive clean energy supply chains: Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy
New Delhi, 6 August 2026: “PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is transforming India's energy landscape by taking clean energy directly to households. Today, the scheme has expanded to benefit 50 lakh households. The pace of installations has accelerated more than threefold, from around 5,000 installations per day in October 2025 to over 16000 per day in July 2026,” said Shri Pralhad Joshi, Hon’ble Union Minister of New & Renewable Energy and Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and Education.
The scheme has helped create a nationwide rooftop solar ecosystem while supporting domestic renewable energy manufacturing. India is also approaching the landmark of 300 GW of installed non-fossil fuel power capacity and remains firmly on course to achieve its target of 500 GW by 2030.
The Minister highlighted a series of policy and regulatory measures undertaken by the Government to strengthen India's renewable energy ecosystem and support industry growth. These include the PLI Scheme for High Efficiency Solar PV Modules, Green Energy Corridor programme, the reduction of GST on renewable energy devices and components, the extension of Basic Customs Duty exemptions on capital goods for lithium-ion cell manufacturing for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and the launch of the Renewable Energy Equipment Import Monitoring System.
Emphasising the importance of innovation, Mr Joshi called on industry to strengthen investments in research and development, particularly in next-generation solar technologies, energy storage solutions and emerging clean energy technologies.
Highlighting the critical role of manufacturing in energy transition, Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy, Hon'ble Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries, said, “As India accelerates its clean energy transition, energy security is no longer defined solely by access to resources. It is increasingly shaped by our ability to manufacture, innovate and build resilient domestic supply chains for the technologies of the future. Under the leadership of Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, India is building an Atmanirbhar Bharat which is not only self-reliant but also globally competitive.”
The Minister highlighted that steel continues to serve as the backbone of the nation's critical infrastructure, while policy interventions are strengthening India's clean energy manufacturing ecosystem. The ?18,100 crore Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) batteries is supporting domestic battery manufacturing capacity and reducing import dependence, while the PM E-DRIVE Scheme is accelerating the growth of a robust clean mobility ecosystem and reinforcing India's ambition to emerge as a global hub for clean energy technologies.
Emphasising the role of clean energy in sustainable development, Dr Mohan Yadav, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, said, “The Delhi Metro runs on electricity supplied from Madhya Pradesh, which gives us immense satisfaction and confidence in our energy sector. It is a strong example of our commitment to sustainable development and has helped generate significant cost savings while promoting cleaner transportation solutions.”
Reflecting on regional energy cooperation, H.E. Lyonpo Gem Tshering, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Royal Government of Bhutan, said, “Our vision is to expand the country’s power generation capacity to 25 GW by 2040 through the addition of 15 GW of hydropower and 5 GW of solar energy. This target is driven by rising domestic energy demand and the need to ensure a reliable and sustainable electricity supply. Bhutan and India share an exemplary partnership in the energy sector, with cooperation spanning over five decades. Energy and power trade have been the cornerstone of our bilateral relationship, and our close collaboration through successive five-year plans continues to drive mutually beneficial growth.”
Underscoring the importance of collective action in the global energy transition, Hon. Anura Karunathilake, Minister of Energy, Government of Sri Lanka, said, "The energy transition is a shared global journey. As countries move from fossil fuels to clean energy, collaboration on energy security, grid readiness, resilient infrastructure, industrial competitiveness and affordability becomes increasingly important. By sharing experiences and learning from one another, we can accelerate the deployment of sustainable energy solutions while ensuring economic growth.
The discussions highlighted the growing consensus that the path to a secure, sustainable, and affordable energy future will require stronger regional partnerships, resilient supply chains, accelerated deployment of clean energy technologies and enhanced domestic manufacturing capabilities. Leaders reaffirmed their commitment to advancing cooperation and sharing best practices to ensure that the energy transition delivers both economic opportunity and long-term energy security across the region.
The key highlight of the event is its exhibition, featuring around 25 leading energy sector organisations over two days. The showcase brings together innovators, technology providers, equipment manufacturers, and industry leaders to present cutting-edge solutions across renewable energy, energy storage, power systems, digital technologies and sustainable industrial applications.
With country and state-focused sessions, the conference brings together key stakeholders from India and abroad to exchange ideas, showcase successful energy transition models and explore opportunities for deeper collaboration in building a resilient, sustainable and future-ready energy ecosystem.
The second day will delve into key thematic areas shaping the future of the energy sector, including smart metering, next-generation solar technologies, multi-fuel pathways for the mobility sector, decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors, transnational energy cooperation, and the diversification of India's energy portfolio to support a resilient and sustainable energy future.
