In the changing scenario of international trade, standards and technical regulations have begun occupying a very significant space in the agenda of the Industry as well as Regulatory Institutions. This report assesses the gaps in existing procedural/administrative/regulatory/ legislative areas and also suggests a roadmap of reforms required to meet global challenges. By measuring up to standards and conformity assessment procedures exports can be increased both in volume as well as in value terms. A good ‘standards regime’ would also help in protecting consumers from sub-standard imports. The collective endeavor has to be in creating an ecosystem where adoption of appropriate standards leads to a sense of pride and has in-built incentive for the Industry.
The report was released during the “Standards Conclave: Role of Standards in International Trade: Challenges Opportunities and Issues” organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India on 16-17 April, 2014 at New Delhi.
