In India, the Northern Region, comprising of eight States, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and the Union Territory of Chandigarh, accounts for around 31 per cent of the total area and population of the country. Northern States of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh are the largest states in the country by area and population respectively. The contribution of Northern Region towards the national GDP was around 26 per cent during 2014-15. The economy of the region is consistently growing over the years. Service sector has played a key role in the regional growth, with the sector growing at a CAGR of 8.1 per cent during the period FY2011-12 to FY2014-15.
