The Indian automotive industry accounts for over 7% of the country’s GDP. The transport sector of India is the third most GHG (Greenhouse gas) emitting sector now, with major contribution coming from the road transport sector. Many of the large automobile companies in India have been progressive in reducing their manufacturing emissions. However, their supply chains, which are long and have many MSMEs involved, do not fully account for their carbon footprint and the necessary measures to reduce it.
This study conducted by CII in partnership with Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation, along with assistance from multiple automobile companies and their supply chains, provides a more detailed understanding in terms of awareness, capacity, capability and other challenges. The study is based on a survey which has been conducted at auto component manufacturering sites provides a clear understanding of the challenge and possible solutions.
