CII in collaboration with its knowledge partner IPE Global published this report which attempts to compile and present perceptions of employers and employees from various sectors on the need for skill development and certification through a process of primary research in the form of surveys and interviews, and desk-based secondary research. Views and concerns of educational institutions are also brought to the fore in this report. Keeping these perspectives in view, the report focuses on the change in demand and supply of workforce across four major sectors of the Indian economy: Automobile, Hospitality, Healthcare and Construction, which altogether contribute about one-third of the India's GDP.
The salient features of this report includes:
- Skill India Initiative and highlighting skilling needs within India
- Views and opinions of education institutions providing secondary and higher education
- Healthcare - The gap between the rural and urban health scenario also highlights the issue of resource inadequacy and lack of standardised training centres in the sector. With a much lower number of medical staff per unit population, there is an urgent need for skilled workers in this sector.
- Automobile – The automotive industry is one of the prime drivers of the economy. A boom in this sector will create multiple job opportunities; however, availability of quality skilled labour is critical for this sector.
- Hospitality - The scarcity of personnel with soft skills, basic language skills and ability to communicate effectively is a key challenge faced by the hospitality sector. Even though different chains of hotels provide in-house training, there is a lack of standardised training curriculum, which poses challenges to movement within the industry.
- Construction - The focus in this sector is on the lowest rung of workers. As an unorganised sector, construction is characterised by seasonal labour employment, sub-contracting labour recruitment and extremely low levels of skill training. The need to focus on training this section of workers is highlighted.
The report was released at UP Skill Summit 2016 on 27th June 2016 at Lucknow.
