India’s healthcare sector is in need of a tectonic shift as the country has one of the lowest per capita spends on healthcare, leading to lower Universal Health Coverage (UHC). This has resulted in higher out of pocket expenditure (OOPE) and has become a major burden for the population, especially the vulnerable sections of society. Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) is a major government policy initiative for this section of the society. If implemented successfully, PMJAY will help the nation move closer to the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of UHC.
This report by CII and PwC comes at a propitious time, when public and private health are converging harmoniously. There is a unique opportunity for all the stakeholders in the sector to come together, and work in sync to create a unique healthcare delivery model that will assure world-class outcomes with cutting-edge technology, while making healthcare affordable for all.
