This Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)report to share the road ahead for India’s healthcare sector over the coming decade, it was released during the 20th CII Health Summit 2023 in November 2023. McKinsey & Company, as knowledge partners, helped with independent third-party research and analysis for the report. Several industry leaders across the various subsectors contributed their valuable insights and time in the creation of this report.
India’s healthcare sector has made meaningful progress in the past decade: average life expectancy has increased, while overall disease burden, mortality, and communicable disease incidence have decreased. These improvements are the result of a combination of factors, including growing capacity and access, improving affordability of health services, a supportive policy environment, and at-scale investments by both public and private sectors.
Despite this progress, challenges remain in improving healthcare access and quality in rural areas, promoting health equity across socioeconomic segments, addressing the shortage of medical professionals, and preparing for the dual challenges of battling communicable and non–communicable diseases and addressing the needs of an aging population.
This report offers just such a vision, seeking to leapfrog rather than make incremental progress. It does so after recognizing the significant progress we have made, as well as the many challenges and opportunities that remain. It identifies a concrete set of imperatives for each subsector in healthcare to reflect on and incorporate into their roadmaps.
