39 companies bagged awards at CII National Energy Efficiency Circle Competition 2017

New Delhi, 19 May 2017: The growth story in India has just begun with the country set to become the largest energy market representing the aspirations of a billion plus people in the coming years. This is even more significant in view of the global scenario when most developed economies are witnessing a declining trend in their energy demand. “Affordability, access and inclusiveness driving India’s energy policies” said Mr Abhay Bakre, Director General, Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ministry of Power, Government of India at the Special Plenary and Award Ceremony of the CII National Energy Efficiency Circle Competition on Friday

He further added that India is projected to see its demand expanding in the coming years will also lead the way in scaling up energy efficiency in line with its commitments towards combatting the challenges of climate change. He elaborated on how India has developing its energy policies that was driven by affordability, access and inclusiveness. "The idea is to make power available to all at affordable prices. Our policies have to make a difference to the last man at the bottom of the pyramid and change his life for the better," he said while elaborating on how cost will play a big role in the Indian market. Citing examples of how solar tariffs have dipped through competitive transparent systems he emphasized that scale will have a large role to play in bringing down costs.

Mr. Rene Van Berkel, UNIDO Representative, Regional Office in India,United Nations Industrial Development Organisation said that India is dignified for decadal double digit growth in the near future and is poised to become a superpower with a billion plus happy people. India has the potential to transform and can move into the big league very rapidly if we leverage the economies of scale bring in greater degrees of transparency and monitor work that has been undertaken.

However, we cannot become a super economic power unless the person at the bottom of the pyramid gets equal opportunity to study, to be skilled and has the opportunity to move towards a better quality of life. To my mind, lack of electricity access in villages across the country is a serious concern for us as a nation. A balanced roadmap which ensures access to reliable and affordable energy is essential for building an energy efficient country.

He congratulated CII for organising the National Energy Efficiency Circle Competition 2017 with a perspective to encourage industry to look at energy efficiency measures and at the same time share the good work being done by them with the other companies as best practices. CII has succeeded in its objective to accelerate the energy efficiency mission in Industry by learning, adopting new technologies and creating a mindset towards energy security.
