Uttarakhand was formed on 9 November 2000 as India’s 27th state, carved from northern Uttar Pradesh. Located in the Himalayan foothills, it shares international borders with China in the north and Nepal in the east, and state borders with Himachal Pradesh in the northwest and Uttar Pradesh in the south. The state has two administrative divisions — Kumaon and Garhwal — comprising 13 districts. Dehradun, the capital, lies in the Doon Valley on the Ganga-Yamuna watershed and is known for its scenic landscape.
