Daman and Diu
Daman and Diu is a Union Territory (UT) situated on the western coast of India. Both districts of the UT are situated approximately 700 kms apart. Mainland Daman is bound by Gujarat’s Valsad district and is closer to mega cities like Mumbai and Surat, while the island of Diu is closer to Ahmedabad and Rajkot. The UT ventured on the path of economic development since 1980s, when the government announced several tax reforms to boost industrial progress. It has a total area of 102 sq kms and a population of 2.43 lakhs according to the 2011 census. The literacy rate is 87.10%. Diu also has air and port connectivity, and has great potential to develop as a major tourist destination. Presently, there are 39 Industrial Estates in Daman, 3,292 Industrial Units of which 2,929 are in the small scale sector. The major industries in the UT are plastic, pharmaceuticals, chemical products and texturizing units. The government has identified the following focus sectors - Textile industry including yarn, spinning and apparel (excluding dyeing), Information Technology/ Information Technology enabled Services, Pharmaceutical Industry, Light Engineering, Electrical Conductors and Allied Industry, Plastics and Plastic products, Marble Tile Industry, Tourism Industry and Creative and Entertainment Industry.
