The “CII-SR Water Alliance” is an initiative of CII to restore water bodies in and around Chennai. Under this initiative, CII has restored the OMR Majestic Kullam at Semmancheri, Chennai. The work on this water body commenced in the month of May’19 and was undertaken with the support of the CII foundation. The restored OMR Majestic Kullam was launched in the presence of S Narasimhan Co-Chairman, Affirmative Action Sub-Committee, along with members of the local community and representatives from Greater Chennai Corporation on Saturday in Chennai.
The efforts included cleaning of the floor of the pond, de-silting and deepening, creation and strengthening of the bund, construction of the filter bed inlet and outlet and plantation around the water body. The community was encouraged to maintain the area and actively participate in environmental conservation.
“Waterbody rejuvenation is an important step towards the conservation of water resources while also supporting the livelihood of the surrounding community this is very relevant to the sustainable development progress we make. Thus far CII have completed restoration works in 6 water bodies including OMR Majestic Layout and currently working on rejuvenation 4 more water bodies in Chennai”, said Narasimhan. Importantly, CII is creating a framework and devising a policy-based initiative for a Water Secure South India which will influence the Southern States in terms of well-organized water usage, water security, systematic water storage, and distribution plan, he further added.
