With the Government’s focus on Digital India, e-health is one of the key areas that can benefit through disruptive and innovative technologies like Cloud Computing.
Speaking at the 5th CII National Cloud Summit, Mr K B Aggarwal, Additional Secretary, Department of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India and the Chief Guest at the Summit highlighted that the doctor-patient ration in India is still very low, and IT technologies like Cloud can help bridge this gap by offering specialized services such as teleconsultation and computerized monitoring.
He shared that the government is working towards creating an integrated health information program that can create unique patient identity through the National Identification Number (NIN) and Aadhaar to avoid duplication of data. The Department is also working to bring out a draft policy on Security and Privacy shortly.
The Guest of Honor at the program, Ms Neeta Verma, Director General, National Informatics Centre, Department of Electronics & Information Technology (DeitY), Government of India, said that the government is focusing on the strategy of “Cloud First”, to give a boost to the SMEs and Start-up community for empowerment and growth, adding that this technology has the power to disrupt and innovate.
Mr S Premkumar, Chairman, CII National Sub-Committee on Cloud Computing and Executive Vice Chairman & MD, HCL Infosystems Ltd in his address said, “We have moved beyond the inflection point in terms of Cloud adoption and acceptance. It is heartening to note that various industries in India have made significant contribution as enthusiastic adopters of Cloud platforms. A significant part of Cloud adoption will happen in the BFSI and Healthcare industries. I am confident that the focused deliberations in today’s Summit will help us understand and explore new business models around the Cloud that can increase productivity, create operational efficiencies and fuel more disruptive innovations.”

CII also released a report “Boosting Market Dynamics with Digital Technologies” at the Summit.
The report covers the benefits and challenges faced in the adoption of cloud computing in the healthcare and financial services industry in India. It highlights the best practices being followed globally by companies in industries that have successfully adopted the cloud, and recommends an approach for future adoption. The report also assesses the current state of data protection and privacy laws in India and proposes an approach to formulate and enforce newer laws and regulations that are relevant to the current context.
