India is the second largest producer of Leather , Footwear and Leather products in the world. The leather and leather products industry contributes less than 1% to India’s GDP and Footwear industry contributes about 2% to India’s GDP. The sector employees over 2.5 million people and has potential to create 2 million jobs in the next 5 years. The Government of India has allowed 100 per cent foreign direct investment (FDI) in the sector. The tanning industry has adopted Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) systems to meet environmental regulations. As a measure to boost manufacturing in the leather footwear segment, excise duty has been reduced from 12% to 6% for footwear costing between INR 500 and INR 1000. CII has a National Committee on Leather ,Footwear and Leather Products having representation of major leather, footwear and leather products companies and key stakeholders associated with the sector.
